A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
