Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
