As Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Viral Photo Depicts Lifeguard Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous others in the area, noticed cracking sounds ringing out across the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the street, conversing with a duo who had hurried up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up at her rear. This turned out to be a rescuer, running at full speed to Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. It was just him heading in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and unshod … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every instinct would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery During Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of valour in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, police and paramedics attending to dozens of victims.

Community Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to come out of the local area, with the beach facility next to the scene of the incident becoming a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, including entering the surf to assist people needing help.

In the days after the attack, comments of gratitude flooded in. An online statement conveyed gratitude for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always overcome evil”.

The team of lifeguards published a communication, noting they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the care directed at our responders,” the team commented. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the aim that it aids those involved.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent lifeguards, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the instant the violence started right into late that night.

“We have heard so many powerful accounts, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a council representative.

“These individuals show altruism every day in keeping our iconic beaches protected for visitors, but what we observed on that day should be commended.

“As we grieve and process the terror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the presence of such darkness.”
