Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.
