An defense minister has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been told to refrain from talking about secret matters in all vehicles.
Security Guidance for Defence Personnel
In a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Background
This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This broader security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, including vehicle use to communication habits.
