Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Prison Memoir Documenting Two Dozen Days Behind Bars

The ex-president of France plans a book this autumn titled Notes from a Cell, which recounts the period endured in jail.

The announcement came less than two weeks following the ex-leader gained freedom as he contests the guilty verdict related to criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to secure political financing linked to the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he notes in one passage, implying the book centers around his musings while in seclusion instead of wider commentary regarding the packed and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing in that facility, where there is endless commotion,” he adds. “The racket is alas constant. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is fortified while incarcerated.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, he was present via screen from his cell, depicting prison life as draining. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this ordeal manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s a trial forced upon me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It affects one on any prisoner because it’s gruelling.”

Historical Context

He, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as past president of an EU country and the first leader since WWII from France to experience jail.

Before entering jail he had said he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

Cell Library

It remains unclear whether he had time to read and critique the three books he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, a plot where a blameless person ends up incarcerated later flees to take revenge.

Daily Reality

He remained secluded for his own security in a space roughly 100 square feet including private facilities in the Paris jail in the city. Security personnel were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

It was stated his diet consisted only yoghurts during his stay because he feared prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Options were available to prepare his own meals but refused this, as per accounts. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

The legal representative, who visited his client every day while he was in prison, informed the court security would be better outside jail rather than in custody. “He received menacing messages, has heard screaming after dark plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

His incarceration began on 21 October following the judiciary sentenced him to a half-decade term on conspiracy charges related to a plan to obtain election financing for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, with a new trial is scheduled for next spring.
