Some reports suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming Trump had pressured him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump endorsed a truce plan endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the current front line.
