The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever prevented the introduction of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, disclosed that he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur stated via social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, that closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which was first established several years back for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
The founder revealed how he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues that the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following decades of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
