A large-scale rescue and recovery effort is currently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of lost sailing vessels loaded with relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Military Search Efforts Launched

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of 9 sailors, per a navy statement.

The vessels had been expected to reach the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

Background of Relief to Cuba

The island nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island struggles through widespread power outages across the country.

"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with suitable navigational gear and communication devices," an official associated with the mission commented.

The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"The group is working closely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Previous Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had transported 14 tons of donated goods to the country.

That vessel, nicknamed "a modern Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Castro returned to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Broader International Backdrop

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgical procedures postponed in Cuba because of power shortages.

Diplomatic pressure have increased in recent months, with comments from several officials emphasizing the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Responding to certain proposals, a prominent government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations had begun, although their current progress remains unclear.

The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to locate the boats and guarantee the safety of the crews.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
